Superior Repositioning Splint
The SRS, also referred to as the centric relation splint, is typically used in TMD treatment to establish a harmonious disc, condyle, and fossa relationship. Worn as an upper appliance, the SRS incorporates a full occlusal scheme with incisal guidance. The SRS is a full coverage splint, ideally fabricated in the laboratory with articulated models in centric relation. The anterior interocclusal acrylic is balanced to allow lateral and protrusive movements with incisal guidance.

Anterior Repositioning Splint
The ARS is used in TMD treatment to reposition the mandible in a forward position while allowing the disc assembly to resume a more normal position in relation to the condyle and fossa. The ARS can be used as an upper or lower appliance. The upper appliance is generally worn at night, as speaking may be difficult due to the anterior ramp. For daytime wear, a lower ARS can be made with the duplicate mandibular position.

MORA/Gelb
The Mandibular Orthopedic Repositioning Appliance (or Gelb) is a lower splint used in TMD treatment to reposition the mandible in a forward position while allowing normalization of the condyle, disc, and fossa relationships. The MORA is made on the lower arch with a heavy lingual bar connecting the two acrylic halves.

Acrylic Splint Herbst
The Herbst can be used as an anterior repositioning appliance by fabricating full arch acrylic splints connected by the Herbst mechanism. This design maintains the mandible in an exact A-P and vertical dimension while allowing lateral movements and vertical opening. The Herbst splint is easily adjusted in the A-P dimension to alter mandible position.

Tanner Repositioning Splint
The Tanner repositioning splint is a lower appliance used in TMD treatment. It is similar to the lower SRS in design and function. Acrylic contacts the upper anterior and posterior teeth, with a balanced occlusal scheme incorporated into the anterior section. This splint is fabricated with continuous lingual acrylic coverage on the mandibular arch. Lower occlusal acrylic contacts the upper posterior teeth with slight indexing to help support the mandibular position.
